Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Journalists Association Chairman Jimmy Goh welcomes people of all ethnic groups, especially indigenous community, to participate in the 7th China-Sabah Short Film Competition.

He encourages them to present different China-Sabah friendship stories from various perspectives.

To encourage more students to participate in the 7th China-Sabah Short Film Competition, Jimmy, along with Secretary Teo Jinn Jiun and committee member Chu Ping Tyng, recently paid a courteous visit to SM All Saints.

They hope that through the school’s promotion, all teachers and students will engage in this meaningful competition.

Jimmy said that in the past six editions of the competition, most participants are Chinese, and the works submitted often focus on the perspective of Chinese cultural, Chinese traditions and Chinese education in Sabah.

However, the organizers hope to receive more responses from different ethnic groups, especially from indigenous friends.

“China-Sabah relationship definitely has for interpretation. For example, the interactions and relationships between Chinese people and natives in Sabah are quite common.

“There are many Chinese friends among Sabah’s other ethnic groups, and intermarriage between Chinese and natives is also a common occurrence.

“These are all excellent subjects. The point of Sabah’s multicultural integration can bring out a different spark in China-Sabah relationship and elevate it to another level,” he said.

Requirements is videos of no more than five minutes for Short Film category or videos of no more than 2 minutes for TikTok category, depicting their interactions, connections, friendships, and exchanges with Chinese culture or Chinese people, showcase their type of China-Sabah relationship.

The works do not necessarily have to be in Chinese, they can also be in Malay or English.

He noted that among the award-winning works in previous years, there was a TikTok video of friends from different races singing a Chinese song together, and another featuring people from various races performing Chinese music.

“This shows that the most touching stories are always around us; we just get used to them and forget their beauty. Good works don’t have to be extraordinary. Often, stories that are more down-to-earth and relatable are the ones that resonate the most.”

The 7th China-Sabah Short Film Competition, organized by the Consulate General of China in Kota Kinabalu and co-organized by the Kota Kinabalu Journalists Association, will accept submissions until October 20.
