No more plastic bags for shoppers in Kota Kinabalu

The “Bring Bah Bag Days” campaign was also extended to some of the building markets under the jurisdiction of DBKK, namely Pekan Manggatal, Pekan Inanam and Pekan Telipok, involving a total of 373 hawkers, which targeted to be fully implemented in all building markets by October 2024.
Kota Kinabalu: Starting today (Aug 1), the “Bring Bah Bag Days” campaign begins in the entire Kota Kinabalu City.
According to a statement issued by City Hall Wednesday, under this green initiative, no more plastic bags will be supplied, either paid or free, to all who patronise supermarket premises (hypermarkets, supermarkets, marts), department stores, chain stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, groceries, convenience stores at petrol stations, bakeries and clothing stores on a daily basis.

“The ‘Bawa Bah Bag Days’ campaign, formerly known as ‘Bawa Beg Bah’ every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, was an effort by City Hall to preserve the nature of the city, reduce pollution caused by single-use plastic bags and at the same time giving birth to a city that can be inherited by future generations.
“After this, DBKK will target all other types of business premises that will also support and participate in this campaign, including fast food restaurants, hardware stores, beauty accessories stores, sports stores and other business premises.
“DBKK is also aware that single-use plastic is also used by all traders in DBKK’s building markets,” it said.
Following this, the “Bring Bah Bag Days” campaign was also extended to some of the building markets under the jurisdiction of DBKK, namely Pekan Manggatal, Pekan Inanam and Pekan Telipok, involving a total of 373 hawkers, which targeted to be fully implemented in all building markets by October 2024.

However, the DBKK statement said exemptions are given to market vendors who carry out raw material business such as fish, meat and seafood.
“All residents of Kota Kinabalu and visitors from outside the district are urged to bring own reusable bags or bags environmentally friendly (biodegrable or compostable) when shopping or buy reusable bags provided by major supermarkets.

“Reduce, reuse and recycle for more tomorrow good,” it said.
