PAPAR: A double-storey sports arena equipped with 20 badminton courts, gymnasium centre and table tennis courts will soon be built at Parklane City.

Parklane City’s developer WSG Group through its managing director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen said the sports facilities will enable the locals to train to compete in higher levels of competition.

“It is my hope to see athletes from Papar represent Sabah or Malaysia in the Olympics or Paralympics and make our country proud by winning the gold medal,” she said.

Susan revealed that she aspires to transform Benoni New Township into a sports city, and the sports area is a means to achieve the goal.

She said the double-storey sports arena will commence construction next year and be completed in two years.

Susan said this after treating a group of badminton players to the latest Malaysian movie ‘Gold’, a sports docudrama biography film based on Cheah Liek Hou’s journey on winning gold at the 2020 Paralympic Games in badminton, at 10Star Cinemas in Parklane City here on Tuesday.

Susan said the 10Star Cinemas at Parklane City has received overwhelming response since its opening and the screening of ‘Gold’ serves as an inspiration to the youngsters in Papar.

“I personally was inspired to build a sports arena equipped with badminton courts after watching the movie,” she said.

Also present was Sabah Badminton Association vice president Anthony Liaw, who will be leading 24 shuttlers from Sabah to compete at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak from August 17 to 24.

He said the association had paid a courtesy call on Susan recently to discuss possible collaborations in organising state or national level badminton tournaments, given that the latter is an avid badminton player herself.
