Kota Kinabalu: The Kota Kinabalu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCAKK) wants animal dumpers to be punished.

Criticising the casual attitude of the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), the NGO fumed over the closed case of two kittens dumped in front of an animal clinic here at 9am on April 20 with no further action.

“The heartless act was captured on CCTV…SPCAKK reported the incident to DVS on May 3.

“According to the Sabah Animal Welfare Enactment 2015, abandoning animals constitutes a punishable crime.

“Despite this, the irresponsible person faced no punishment for the crime. The perpetrator only needed to pay some medical and quarantine fees to the DVS for dumping the kittens.

“On the other hand, SPCAKK, a non-profit animal welfare organisation relying on public donations, was ‘punished’ by having to take responsibility for the ongoing care of the kittens, including vaccinations, neutering and food costs,” it said in a statement.

SPCAKK said the DVS’s decision did not reflect the protection interest and welfare of animals.

“It is concerning, as it not only perpetuates animal abuse but also undermines public trust in our animal protection laws.

“SPCAKK calls on animal lovers to unite and urge the authorities to enforce the laws and ensure that those who harm animals are held accountable.”
