Kota Kinabalu: Two women were fined a total of RM3,700 on Thursday for engaging in gambling activities.
Cashier Aunah Abdul Gadal, 34, and Julizah Soriau, 31, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrates Lovely Natasha Charles.
Aunah was fined RM2,000 or two months jail for engaging in online gambling using a handphone on April 18 at 4.19pm behind a shop at Block 17, Penampang New Township.
Julizah was fined RM1,700 or two months jail for having three illegal lottery tickets at 3.30pm on June 3 at the five foot-way of a coffeeshop in Donggongon.
The court was informed by the prosecution that Aunah was detained by police during a raid following a tip-off for engaging in online gambling.
A handphone and RM60 cash were seized from Aunah, said the prosecution.
Julizah was also arrested by police during a raid after she was found having gambling paraphernalia, including a mobile printer, handphone and RM25 cash.
Aunah was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming House Act while Julizah was charged under Section 9(1) of the same Act which each provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.
Both women requested a lenient sentence.
The court ordered the seized money to be forfeited as government revenue.
In another case, a 41-year-old man was charged with damaging the window of a car.
Contractor Andy Kong Yin Leong pleaded not guilty to committing mischief by committing the offence on the Toyota Rush belonging to Chung Jer Won which resulted in a loss of RM1,144.08.
The offence allegedly took place on July 25 at 1pm, at Taman Dai Ming Baru, Jalan Kolombong.
The charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between one year and five years or fine or both, on conviction.
The court set Sept 2 for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM1,600 in two sureties.
