Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) is actively implementing a project to upgrade 41 Pasar Tamu’s in Sabah with an allocation of RM10 million this year.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said a total of 38 tamus are in the process of being upgraded with an allocation of RM7.6 million and are expected to be completed this year.

“While a total of three tamus, namely, Kinabatangan Pasar Tamu, Menggerimot Pasar Tamu and Tiulon Youth Scheme Pasar Tamu are in the process of documentation and implementation for the purpose of upgrading,” he said.

The project provides opportunities and benefits for up to 150 entrepreneurs in a Pasar Tamu in carrying out agro-food marketing activities.

Arthur said the effort reflects the commitment of the Federal Government to improve the facilities and comfort of visitors at Pasar Tamu.

For the record, he said, until 2023, Fama spent RM5.36 million to upgrade six existing Pasar Tamu’s, namely Sook Keningau Pasar Tamu, Tomborungus Kudat Dataran Pasar Tamu, Kunak Pasar Tamu, Beluran Pasar Tamu, Tuaran Pasar Tamu and Telupid Pasar Tamu.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), through Fama, is strengthening cooperation with the Sabah Regional Government, especially the Local Authorities (PBT) in an effort to transform Pasar Tamu operations.

“Pasar Tamu plays an important role as a marketing field for the production of agricultural and agro-food products held weekly in the Sabah Region,” he said.

Earlier, Arthur who is also Pensiangan MP, held a site visit session in conjunction with the Fama Fest 2024 @ Sabah programme on Aug 29 to Sept 1.

A total of 442 entrepreneurs with estimated sales of RM250,000 involving some 20,000 visitors are expected at the programme.

Also present were Fama Deputy Director General (Development), Faisal Iswardi and Sabah State Fama Director, Sarman Sidno.
