PETALING JAYA: Sprinter Azeem Fahmi has qualified for Round 1 of the 100m athletics event at the Paris Olympics when he finished second in a preliminary heat today.

The US-based Azeem, who is taking part in the Games on a wild card, clocked a time of 10.42s, to finish behind Gambia’s E Camara, who clocked 10.29s.

Only 14 runners advanced to Round 1, which will start from 5.55pm (Malaysian time).

Azeem, who holds the national 100m record of 10.09s set two years ago, said the goal in the preliminary round was to qualify for the main draw.

"The upcoming race is going to be the real one, so I’m going to give my all. Hopefully, I can survive," Bernama quoted him as saying.

The world and Olympic records for the 100m sprint are still held by Jamaican legend Usain Bolt, with times of 9.58s (August 2009 in Berlin) and 9.63s (August 2012 in London), respectively.
