Chance to sell that used cooking oil
He said in the past, there had been calls for users to find alternative ways to dispose of their used oil but a solution was not given, and so the people had no idea how to do it. Now, with Petronas making a way for this purpose, it should be easier for people to take part, said Chan.
Kota Kinabalu: Sabahans are encouraged to keep their used cooking oil and resell them at any participating outlets such as selected Petronas stations.

This is to support an awareness and education initiative that aims to promote sustainable living and reduction in carbon emissions, said Deputy Minister of Plantations and Commodities Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

He said as part of the Fryer 2 Flyer initiative by the Ministry with Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB), with the cooperation of the City Hall (DBKK), it is also to help participants generate some income and allow for the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The Kota Kinabalu MP said this when launching the programme at the Petronas Petrol Station along Jalan Lintas near here, Saturday (Aug 3).

In Sabah, there are three participating Petronas gas stations which includes one in Tawau - Jalan Utara and Sandakan - Batu 8 Labuk bypass, respectively.

The public can sell their used oil at RM2.50 per kg in the participating Petronas stations every Sunday.

This price is cheaper compared to the selling price in Peninsular Malaysia due to the fuel subsidy differences.

Chan said Petronas Dagangan Berhad kick started the programme in Putrajaya in July, last year, and expanded the participating gas stations to 53 nationwide.

“With the expansion of participating gas stations, the Ministry aims to achieve over 500,000kg of used oil with the participation from some 100,000 people by the end of the year,” he said.

Chan said the programme commends the government’s objective of achieving a zero carbon emission nation by the year 2050, while the development of UCO into SAF can be pushed further.

Based on the Malaysian Palm Oil Board record, the amount of used oil collected in Sabah is very low at less than 2,700 tonnes from January up to June this year, he said.

This is less than 1.5pc the total collection nationwide within the same period which is 200,000 tonnes, he said, adding that some 77pc of the population do not recycle their used cooking oil and choose to dispose of them in bins or other unsuitable methods.

“With this campaign, we hope more Sabahans will learn the importance of properly disposing of their used oil and to be part of environmentally friendly initiatives,” Chan said.

He also called on the DBKK to be an active part of this programme through a by-law on used cooking oil disposal and collection so that food vendors and residents have a proper way of handing their used oil.

He said in the past, there had been calls for users to find alternative ways to dispose of their used oil but a solution was not given, and so the people had no idea how to do it. Now, with Petronas making a way for this purpose, it should be easier for people to take part, said Chan.

“I hope more Sabahans can get more involved so that we can collect the volume, then we can talk about feasibility and talk about investment, etc,” Chan said.

For the purpose of the palm oil industry players, specifically the smaller farmers, the Ministry is committed to see to the increase in downstream products apart from supporting economic benefits from palm biomass.

In this context, he said the used oil has high demand in the production of SAF, and Petronas is also in the midst of planning a biofuel refinery plant, which is expected to be ready in 2028.

For the record, SAF is about three times more expensive than ordinary jet fuel, Chan said.
