Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) cracked down on the diversion of diesel through Ops Tiris in Penampang on Friday night.

A team of enforcement officers from the Sabah KPDN Headquarters detained a four-wheel drive and a lorry each containing 900 litres and 600 litres in additional tanks while trying to purchase the diesel at a petrol station in Jalan Penampang.

According to Sabah KPDN Director Georgie Abas, two local drivers aged 40 and 29 were detained to assist investigations into the 9.10pm raid.

“The seizure of 1,500 litres of diesel oil, an Isuzu Trooper and a Toyota Dyna including the tanks, pumps and hoses amounted to RM43,855.

“The two arrested drivers failed to show any documents or permission from the KPDN to buy and carry diesel fuel stored in an additional tank other than the vehicle’s fuel tank.

“It was also identified that the modus operandi of this activity is to buy subsidized diesel fuel from petrol stations operating at night and collect it before being suspected of selling it to parties ineligible to buy subsidized diesel fuel at a higher price,” he said in a statement.

According to him, the case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961 for possessing a controlled item which is diesel oil with the intention of committing an offence under the Supply Control Act 1961 (Act 122).

Individuals convicted can be fined not more than RM1 million and not more than RM3 million or imprisonment not more than three years or both for subsequent offences.

Companies, if found guilty, can be fined not exceeding RM2 million and not exceeding RM5 million for subsequent offences.
