Kota Kinabalu: It is important for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and local authorities to collaborate in addressing the issue of abandoned animals in Sandakan.
Deputy Chief Minister II cum Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam urged both parties to work hand in hand to find sustainable solutions.

As of now, there are 550 animals comprising dogs and cats that are housed at the Sandakan SPCA shelter located at Mile 9 here. All of these animals were found abandoned and injured around the district before being rescued by SPCA team.
Joachim expressed willingness to assist SPCA Sandakan through his Ministry to Chairman of SPCA Sandakan, Ku Chiau Pin and Secretary, Voo Min Gin.
The visit to the SPCA office was arranged by Chairman of Sabah Development Berhad cum Tanjung Papat Assemblyman, Datuk Frankie Poon.
During the meeting, SPCA representatives highlighted several critical challenges, including the maintenance of shelters, food and medical expenditures, and the urgent need for a neutering program.
They emphasised the difficulties in bringing in volunteer veterinarians due to stringent approval permit requirements.
Therefore, SPCA Sandakan is looking forward to any ongoing cooperation with the Ministry to improve animal welfare in the district.
