Kota Kinabalu: In an era where digital storytelling and social media play crucial roles in media, a workshop titled “TikTok Storytelling for Sabah Reporters” taught some 30 local journalists the skills needed to navigate these modern platforms effectively.
Held over two days, the workshop offered participants hands-on experience with TikTok and advanced AI tools, aimed at enhancing their content creation abilities.

Participants were divided into groups and tasked with creating TikTok content to showcase Sabah’s local culture, events, and tourism.
Trainer Ainol Amriz Ismail said one key to highly-engaging TikTok content is the visual appeal.
“When you go out for fieldwork, remember that the visuals you capture will be the foundation of your story. Make sure they are compelling and relevant,” he said.
He said the second essential element is the narrative structure.

“It is also about crafting a narrative that captures and holds the audience’s attention,” he said.
The workshop also featured a case study from UtusanTV, illustrating the significant 4.1mil audience engagement and revenue opportunities that effective TikTok use can offer.

The strategies he shared included interacting with viewers during news live, using TikTok Analytics and planning of contents and strategies.
He also shared an incident where the UtusanTV’s TikTok account was taken down.
“It happened three times to us. 3.9 million followers gone.
“(However,) when we got our plan completed, we got our account back.
