Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Sabah State Excellence Scholarship (BCNS) is a prestigious recognition by the State Government for students achievers in Sabah.

It aligns with the State Government’s aspiration through the Yayasan Sabah Group to see more human capital capable of competing on the global stage.

“The Yayasan Sabah Group has been entrusted with providing this excellence scholarship since 1990. To date, 755 students have benefited from this programme and RM132.6 million spent.

“In total, from 1967 to 2023, the Yayasan Sabah Group spent RM704.5 million in providing scholarships, bursaries and higher education loans which have benefited 44,075 Sabah students.

“Today, 88 students received the State Government scholarships namely the Sabah Excellent Scholarship Award, the State Government Outstanding Scholarship Award and the Muis Award,” he said at the 35th BCNS Presentation Ceremony at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Tuesday.

Describing the event as very special, Hajiji who is also Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustees Chairman, hopes the recipients would work harder for greater success.

He also said the implementation of the State Government Excellence Scholarship Award (BCKNS) which began in 2022 is in line with the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan.

“From 2022 to 2023, twenty students benefited from this programme and RM1.04 million has been spent. The MUIS Award which started in 2020 has benefited 50 students until last year,” said Hajiji.

He said the State Government in 2023 increased the allocation for the State Government Scholarship (BKNS) to RM101 million from RM50 million previously, with a total of 7,304 students having received sponsorship to continue their studies at home and abroad this year.

Hajiji said the Government always supports and is committed to empowering the development of human capital through various education funding including scholarships, education assistance, zakat contributions and education loans.

“In addition to helping ease the burden borne by parents, the various initiatives are also to ensure that children do not drop out and continue their studies to a higher level.

“This is in line with the State Government’s goal of giving priority to education to produce competitive, skilled and high-quality human capital. Only through knowledge, skills and higher education will our children be able to compete and be successful, thereby contributing to the development of society and the State,” he said.
