Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) recently launched its ‘Jelajah Saya Digital (JSD) programme in a push towards digital transformation here.

The initiative is part of a broader national strategy aimed at boosting digital literacy and awareness across all levels of Malaysian society.

Speaking at the launch event held at the Sabah International Convention Centre, MDEC Chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh emphasised the importance of this transition.

“The world is rapidly digitalising and our initiative focusses on preparing Malaysians for this new era where smartphones are becoming central to all transactions and communications,” he said.

The JSD programme, now in its 15th iteration since the beginning of the year, is structured around four key elements, Digital Me Literacy, Digital Me Business, Digital Me Freelance and Digital Me Career.

These components are designed to cater to various aspects of digital life and are implemented through both physical and online platforms, ensuring accessibility for all age groups.

“Kota Kinabalu, known for its rich cultural heritage and tourism potential, stands to benefit significantly from this digital push,” he said.

He urged local entrepreneurs to leverage digital tools to expand their market reach and enhance the marketability of their services.

“In Kota Kinabalu, the opportunities are vast. Local businesses must seize this chance to promote their products and services more widely through digital channels,” he said.

He said the impact of MDEC’s digital initiatives in Sabah is already evident.

“The State has recorded an impressive 42,900 entrepreneurs engaged in digital businesses, generating a combined income of RM51.93 million.

“On a larger scale, MDEC’s e-entrepreneur training programs have reached over 560,000 students from higher education institutions and vocational colleges across Malaysia, resulting in a staggering RM1.26 billion in generated income.

“These figures are a testament to the talent and potential of Sabah’s people,” he said, highlighting the success of MDEC’s efforts in nurturing digital skills and creating economic opportunities.

The initiative also extends to younger generations through the My Digital Maker program, which focusses on sparking interest in technology and digital innovation among school students, particularly in Kota Kinabalu.

“We believe that many children at the school level have the talent and interest to drive future digital innovations,” he said.

The JSD is aligned with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP), reflecting the government’s commitment to preparing its citizens for a digital future.

As the program continues to expand to more locations across the country, it promises to play a crucial role in Malaysia’s digital transformation journey.

The launch event was officiated by Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament.
