Two Tawau bicycle theft gang members held

TAWAU: Two local men, believed to be part of a bicycle theft gang, were arrested in separate operations between 1am and 1.30am on Tuesday.
Tawau District Police Chief, ACP Jasmin Hussin, said the suspects, aged 30 and 51, were arrested by the Tawau Police Station Strike Team on Op Kesan duties.
ADVERTISEMENT He said the first suspect was detained in the Taman Ria 7 area around 1am, leading to the discovery of three bicycles of various brands hidden behind his house.
Earlier, police spotted the suspect, who was identified as being involved in theft cases, acting suspiciously in front of his house during a police patrol in the area.
“When the police approached him, the suspect tried to flee and acted aggressively, but was successfully apprehended.
“Further inspection of the suspect revealed two transparent plastic packets containing 0.03gm of methamphetamine in his pants pocket,” he added.
ADVERTISEMENT Jasmin said the second suspect was arrested in Kg Tanjung Batu Darat at 1.30am and seized a modified branded bicycle hidden behind his house.
He said police also found two small packets suspected of containing 0.09gm of methamphetamine in the suspect’s trouser pocket.
ADVERTISEMENT He added that urine screening tests found both suspects positive for drugs, and each had past records involving crime and drugs.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code and Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
