SANDAKAN: A 38-year-old illegal immigrant was jailed a total of 18 years and ordered to get six strokes of the cane for two charges - causing hurt to a woman while robbing her and also robbing a married couple.

Sessions Court Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal meted out the sentence to Normin Nuri who pleaded guilty to the two charges against him.

On the first count, Normin was jailed nine years plus three strokes of the cane for assaulting Isab Baba, 51, while robbing her at 5am on May 9 along Jalan  Lintas Sibuga, here.

The incident happened while her car was hit from behind by another vehicle.

When the victim stopped her vehicle to check the damage, the driver of the vehicle which hit her car from behind, the victim with a rotan and  grab her sling bag containing a MyKad, driving licence, ATM card, MyKid and RM15 cash.

The man, later identified as Normin, fled the scene with the bag.

The victim who suffered injuries on her head and hand lodged a police report and Normin was arrested on July 15.

On the second count, he was jailed another nine years and ordered to get three strokes of the cane for robbing a married couple at 5.40am on July 2 along Jalan Lok Yen, Batu 11, here.

The incident also occurred while the victim, Chin Fook Choi, 82, was driving along with his wife towards Beluran when a vehicle overtook his car, causing Chin to stop his vehicle by the roadside.

When Chin went out from his car to check, Normin opened the passenger’s door and grabbed the woman’s sling bag and fled the scene.

Following a police report by the couple, Normin was arrested on July 30.

The court ordered Normin to serve the jail sentence concurrently and referred to the Immigration Department after serving the jail sentence.

Meanwhile, in Magistrate’s Court, Normin was sentenced to 24 months for robbery and disposing off stolen items.

He committed the offence at 5.30am on Jan 16.

Normin was ordered to serve the 24 month consecutively with the Sessions Court’s punishment.
