Unemployed man claims trial to kidnapping, wrongfully confining girl

PETALING JAYA: An unemployed man claimed trial to charges of abducting and wrongfully confining six-year-old Albertine Leo at the Johor Bahru sessions courts today.
Leang Win Son, 31, pleaded not guilty to the two charges after they were read before judge Rasidah Roslee, Harian Metro reported.
ADVERTISEMENT He was accused of kidnapping the girl at Eco Galleria, Taman Botani, Iskandar Puteri, at 8.30pm on July 20.
He was also accused of wrongfully confining the child in a hotel room at Jalan Mahagoni 9, Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor, Selangor, at 4.45am on July 23.
He was charged under Section 363 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a fine, and under Section 346 of the same Act, which provides for a maximum of two years in prison.
In a separate session before judge Siti Noraida Sulaiman, Leang was also accused of possessing 5,317 images and videos of child sexual abuse, stored on two SD cards, a hard drive, and a mobile phone, at a house on Jalan Bunga Raya 2, Taman Sri Kulai near Kulai, at 4pm on July 24.
ADVERTISEMENT He was charged under Section 8(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a maximum of 15 years in prison and at least three strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
Leang was also accused of non-physical sexual abuse by forcing a child to expose her body to him at the same hotel between 12.30pm on July 22 and 4.45am on July 23.
ADVERTISEMENT The charge was made under Section 15(a)(ii) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
Bail was set at RM50,000 with conditions including surrendering his passport, reporting to the nearest police station monthly, and refraining from contacting prosecution witnesses.
The court scheduled the next hearing for Sept 12 for the submission of documents.
Leang was then taken to the Kulai magistrates’ court to face seven more charges under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possessing obscene materials.
On Sunday, police rearrested the 31-year-old, who was previously released on bail, after sex toys and child pornography were found at his home in Kulai.
Police had found the man with Albertine, who went missing at a shopping mall in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, on July 20, at a budget hotel in Batang Kali, Selangor, on July 23.
