Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is confident the party’s membership will exceed 300,000 or about 10 per cent of Sabah’s population of 3.59 million (2023), in one or two months.
“Our membership is now very close to 300,000 people. Every division and branch is currently campaigning to recruit more members. I am confident in one or two months it will exceed 300,000 people,” said Hajiji, who is also Chief Minister, after chairing the Gagasan Rakyat Supreme Council meeting at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Friday.
ADVERTISEMENT Among other things, the meeting discussed preparations for the party’s division-level annual meeting which would take place from Aug 17 until the end of November.
Hajiji said the party’s Supreme Council had instructed all divisions to prepare for their respective annual meetings because the branch-level meetings had already been completed.
“We hope the division-level meetings will go smoothly and that our people or party members can express their views or opinions during their respective division meetings,” he said.
The Gagasan Rakyat’s State General Assembly will be held in November, where they would discuss many matters such as how to strengthen the party, how to increase the membership and so on.
ADVERTISEMENT “The purpose is to ensure Gagasan Rakyat is strong and accepted by the people,” he said, adding all component parties in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and friends in the State Government would be invited to attend the State General Assembly.
“Now we are in GRS. But in our State Government, there is a coalition that is with us which is Pakatan Harapan (PH) and what we call Plus.

“In Plus, we have Barisan Nasional/Umno representatives who support the State Government. They are still in the State Government.
“We have Ministers and Assistant Ministers from BN/Umno in the State Government now.
“This is what we want so that there is no quarrelling. We want to make sure that we develop Sabah together and we make sure that the unity among our people of various races continues to bring good to us all.
“We can work with anyone,” said Hajiji. “In politics nothing is impossible.”
“BN/Umno is now in the State Government. If we look at the State Cabinet, there is Minister Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya from BN/Umno even though his party membership has been suspended and three Assistant Ministers from BN/Umno are also still in the State Government.
“Besides many others who are chairmen of State statutory bodies and government-linked companies (GLCs).
“That’s what happened, it’s unique.”
Asked to comment on a faction of BN/Umno leaders who said they are in the opposition, Hajiji said it is up to them if they say they are in the opposition.
