Kota Kinabalu: Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr extended the travel tax exemption in Mindanao and Palawan until June 2028.

The recent travel tax payment extension garnered positive responses from various sectors, particularly the private sector, which plays a pivotal role in driving the growth of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) initiative.

Marcos’s announced decision made Tuesday in Manila met with commendation and enthusiasm from many sectors particularly people in Mindanao and Palawan.

Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Chairman Joji Ilagsn Bian expressed appreciation for the government action that promotes mobility of people, goods, and services between Mindanao and other EAGA countries.

“ The extension of the travel tax exemption not only benefits travelers but also bolsters economic activities and trade relations within the region,” he stressed.

The exemption, amounting to 1,600 pesos was initially introduced in 1995 as a policy modification initiative to support the economic growth of BIMP-EAGA.

This time-bound policy, typically renewed every five years, has been a consistent measure endorsed by successive administrations.

The private sector, often regarded as the engine of growth in the BIMP-EAGA initiative, welcomes this development as it facilitates smoother and more cost-effective travel for businesses and individuals conducting cross-border activities.

The exemption from travel tax payment eases financial burdens on travelers and enhances the competitiveness of businesses operating within the sub-regional grouping.

The sustained sea links between Zamboanga and Sandakan, coupled with the efforts to revive direct flights between Davao and Manado and establish a proposed Zamboanga-Kota Kinabalu air link, underscore the commitment to strengthening transportation linkages within the BIMP-EAGA region.

These initiatives align with the overarching goal of promoting connectivity and economic integration among the participating countries.

President Marcos ‘s noble measure reflects the administration’s dedication to fostering economic development and enhancing connectivity within the BIMP-EAGA sub-regional grouping.

The private sector’s positive reception of this initiative signals a promising outlook for increased collaboration and growth opportunities in Mindanao, Palawan, and beyond.
