Smuggled fags: MACC remands trio

A remand order for five days until Aug. 16 against the three male suspects aged 30 to 40 was issued by Magistrate Aslianlydia Asneh after an application by MACC at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate’s Court, Sunday.
Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sabah remanded three law enforcement officers of a department in the state on suspicion of accepting bribes amounting to approximately RM120,000 to protect cigarette smuggling activities and to release the contraband.
A remand order for five days until Aug. 16 against the three male suspects aged 30 to 40 was issued by Magistrate Aslianlydia Asneh after an application by MACC at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate’s Court, Sunday.
ADVERTISEMENT According to sources, all the suspects were arrested from about 4pm to 11pm on Saturday in an operation carried out by Sabah MACC in Keningau.
“The latest arrest involving two more enforcement officers is a follow-up to the previous arrest of an enforcement officer in connection with the same case, which is suspected of asking for a bribe of approximately RM120,000 to protect cigarette smuggling activities around Keningau and release the lorry and contraband goods detained by the department.
“Preliminary investigations found that all the suspects who were remanded today are believed to have committed the act recently,” he said.
Sabah MACC Director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the case was investigated under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
