MP is told to act on bridge: Access to cemetery in Beaufort and proboscis viewing affected

BEAUFORT: Residents of Kampung Pilajau here are calling on local leaders and the government to address the collapse bridge in the village which distrupts access and to the village.

The bridge’s collapse has forced locals to take a longer route to the cemetery and has halted tourism in the area, said a resident.

“The collapse has significantly impacted the community. Previously, the bridge was a crucial link, though it was only about 50 feet long. It fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance, which led to its collapse,” he said.

“The once-busy bridge used to facilitate access for tourists heading to see the proboscis monkeys, but with its collapse and the subsequent neglect of the river, tourism has dried up.

“Many local livelihoods, previously supported by tourism, have suffered as a result,” he said.

“We hope the government will address these issues soon. Rebuilding the bridge and maintaining the river are crucial for both our daily needs and the revival of local tourism.

“The residents understand that funding for such projects falls under the jurisdiction of Beaufort MP Datuk Siti Aminah Aching.

They want her to prioritise the reconstruction of the bridge and the maintenance of the creek to restore both their access to the cemetery and the area’s tourism potential, he said.
