Kota Kinabalu: A fatal accident on the Penang Bridge on Sunday was caught on camera.
Facebook user Irene Ling uploaded the dashcam video to the Facebook group, "Our Lovely Hometown Bukit Mertajam", and said the accident occurred on the Penang Island to Seberang Perai route.
ADVERTISEMENT The user said that a white car had signalled left and directly turned into the emergency stopping area, causing a motorcyclist to fly forward and nearly fell into the sea.
“I am unsure if the motorcyclist is in danger,” the user said at the time of posting, adding some drivers lately like to stop in emergency stopping areas to get out and take photos of the scenery.
The dashcam footage showed the incident occurred at 6:41 pm.
Netizens, shocked by the footage, have different opinions on the accident.
ADVERTISEMENT Some believe the motorcyclist had insufficient time to brake or avoid the vehicle, while others questioned the driver’s decision to move towards the emergency area of the bridge at the last minute.
Northeast district police chief ACP Razlam Ab Hamid said the 38-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, latest reports show.
ADVERTISEMENT He said the 22-year-old driver had swerved into the emergency area to change drivers, The Star reported.
“The driver has been arrested but granted police bail pending an investigation of the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving,” he reportedly said.
