No plan to leave the Unity Government: Warisan

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan (Warisan) President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal denied claims that the party intends to leave the Unity Government.

He said Warisan remains part of the current Federal Government.

“There is no intention to leave. The picture of me with Tun Mahathir is from the past. That was when I was proposed as a candidate for Prime Minister, along with Anwar and Muhyiddin. After that, I withdrew and expressed my support for Anwar.

“We are still part of the current government. It is up to them if they want to expel us. It is not a problem for me,” he said during the Warisan President’s tour in Sepanggar on Sunday.

He was responding to claims that Warisan plans to exit the Unity Government.

Regarding potential alliances ahead of the State elections, Shafie said Warisan has not yet decided on its partners.

“Warisan is in opposition at the State level but at the Federal level, we support Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“At the State level, we do not support PH. It is obvious, and we do not collaborate with Umno either.

“We’ll see how things develop. Umno is also partly in opposition, though some members are in the Government, while the majority are in opposition,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Semporna MP confirmed that the party’s Wirawati Deputy Chief Jo-Anna Sue Henley Rampas had left Warisan.

Shafie said Jo-Anna had the right to leave. There was no pressure for her to remain in the party as genuine commitment requires willingness.

However, he declined to reveal the reasons behind Jo-Anna’s departure from Warisan.

“I do not want to mention it. It is not appropriate. But that is her (Jo-anna) right. We (Warisan) had allowed her to be a candidate several times, so it is up to her.

Whoever she chooses to support, what matters most is the people.

“If she leaves, she is no longer a Warisan member. This party does not rely on any individual. We rely on the people to ensure our strength.

“They have the right to leave, so it is up to them. We do not impose any pressure. What is important is the willingness,” he said.

On July 31, Jo-Anna announced via Facebook that she had resigned from all her political positions since December last year.

She is now focusing on her Master’s degree studies at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.

Shafie further said Jo-Anna can choose whether she believes the current government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor can solve the people’s problems over the next four years.

“Perhaps she is attracted to the leadership or the failure of the current government to address the people’s issues.

“Even though some leaders have left the party, many new members are joining.

“More will be joining Warisan, whether in Sandakan, Kudat or Tawau,” he said.
