Jailed for keeping stolen vehicle
Jamal had committed an offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and five years and liability of a fine, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court sentenced an undocumented scrap metal collector to 11 months jail for keeping a stolen vehicle.

Jamal Insan pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to keeping the stolen Nissan Vanette van belonging to Said Zada Laiq Shah on July 23, this year at 7am, Telipok.

The court heard from the prosecution that the van was reported stolen a day earlier on July 22.

Jamal had committed an offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and five years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Unrepresented, Jamal requested a lenient sentence.

The prosecution applied a deterrent sentence and for Jamal to be referred to the Immigration Department as he has no identification documents.

Jamal was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

In another case, a part-time promoter was charged with stealing personal care products from a shop.

Jimah Ajum, 51, pleaded not guilty to stealing a bottle of shampoo, face cleanser and an acne clay mask on Aug 3, at 5pm, at the Guardian, City Mall, Jalan Lintas here.

The charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

The prosecution proposed bail at RM4,000.

Duty counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Jimah, applied a lower bail amount as she is a divorcee with four children and works as a part-time promoter earning RM100 daily.

The court set Sept 6 for case management and released Jimah on a bail of RM1,000 in two sureties.

Meanwhile, an unemployed woman pleaded not guilty to having a mobile phone containing online gambling apps.

Presskaalya, 20, allegedly committed the offence on April 25, this year, at 5pm, at Penampang New Township.

She was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act.

Lovely set Sept 9 for mention and offered the accused a bail of RM1,000 in two sureties.
