SM St Martin and SK Kiawayan crowned champions

TAMBUNAN: SM St Martin and SK Kiawayan respectively emerged as overall champions of the secondary and primary school categories at the Tambunan District School Sports Council (MSSDT)  Athletics Championship held at the Sports Complex here recently.

SM St Martin collected 37 golds, 21 silvers, 17 bronzes while SK Kiawayan collected six golds and one bronze.

Second in the secondary school category were SMK Nambayan with 21 golds, 24 silvers and 27 bronzes while in third and fourth places respectively were SMK Tambunan (17 golds, 27 silvers, 25 bronzes) and SMK Desa Wawasan (three silvers, six bronzes).

Meanwhile, SK Nambayan took second place in the primary school category (two golds, six silvers, one bronze) with SK Pekan third (two golds, three silvers, one bronze).

A total of six athletes from both male and female categories were selected as Outstanding Athletes consisting of Grace Vallerie, Falbianus Jainis, Abby Gayle Handirian, Carlos Vitus, Deeyonie Soidi and Parker Roydelson Peadrson who each created a new MSSDT Championship record.

SMK Nambayan’s Grace set a new record in the discus throw event for the 18-year-old female category with a distance of 26.50 metres (m) and won the silver medal in the shot put event with a record of 8.28m.

This discus throw record surpassed the old mark of 25.64m held by Evelyn Matius since 2004. 

Falbianus from SMK Nambayan equalled the championship record in the high jump event in the 18-year-old male category with a jump of 1.81m, a record previously held by Alexander Constantine since 2014.

He also won two bronze medals in long jump and triple jump with records of 6.29m and 13.24m respectively.

Carlos from SMK Nambayan, set a new record in the javelin for 15-year-old male category with a distance of 47.07m, surpassing the old record of 44.77m held by Backly Liansun since 2013.

For the 15-year-old female category, Abby Gayle from SMK Nambayan won two gold medals, each in the discus throw with a new record of 25.14m and the shot put with a record of 8.78m.

The discus throw record broke the old record of 24.30m held by Lydia De Vega Phillip of SM St. Martin since 2004.

For the 12-year-old female category, Deeyonie Soidi has made the name of SK Patau famous by winning the gold medal in the high jump event and setting a new record with a jump of 1.31m.

This record surpassed the old record of 1.30m held by Estelle Lovieyana Kimberly Roger of SK Kitou in 2023.

Parker Roydelson from SK Kiawayan, who also set a new record in the high jump event in the 12-year-old male category with a record of 1.49m, breaking the old record of 1.44m held by Arvin Ferdaus and Deenoel Soidi in 2022.

A total of four secondary and 29 primary schools with 792 participants competed in the tournament.

The District Officer, Sobitun Makajil, closed the tournament and presented prizes to the winners.
