Sustainable forestry practices crucial for long-term success: Chan

KENINGAU: Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Chan Foong Hin said sustainable forestry practices is important for the long-term success of Malaysia’s timber industry and forest preservation. 

He made the remarks after his two-day working visit to Keningau where he visited two prominent timber factories, Focus Lumber Berhad and Uni-Lumber Sdn Bhd, gaining insights into their operations.

Focus Lumber Berhad, established in 1989, has become a key player in plywood, veneer, and Laminated Veneer Lumber production.

Uni-Lumber Sdn Bhd, founded in 1996, has also made significant contributions to sustainable forest resource management.

A key highlight of the visit was Chan’s trip to the Sapulut Forest Reserve, managed by Jawala Plantation Industries Sdn Bhd (JPISB). 

The company recently received the “Best Model Forest Plantation in Malaysia” award from the Malaysia Timber Industry Board, recognising its commitment to sustainable forestry practices.

Chan planted a “Laran” tree at the reserve, symbolising the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable forestry that balances environmental conservation with economic growth. 

The JPISB manages approximately 11,043 hectares of Commercial Forest Reserve, cultivating industrial tree plantations as a renewable resource for Malaysia’s wood-processing industry.

Chan also met with the Sabah Timber Industries Association, expressing satisfaction with Sabah’s ability to attract foreign investors from countries, including Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan.

“Sustainable timber supply is crucial for both our wood industry’s success and the preservation of natural forests,” Chan said. 

He praised the efforts of companies like JPISB, Focus Lumber, and Uni-Lumber in integrating sustainable practices into their operations.

Accompanied by Senator Puan Noorita Sual, Chan’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to supporting sustainable forestry and the wood industry in Sabah. 

The initiative aims to ensure the continued growth of the timber sector while preserving Malaysia’s natural resources for future generations.
