Harris should not stay silent: Scrapping of Labuan’s duty-free perks

LABUAN: An activist here urged former Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Salleh to clear the air on whether there has been any breach of agreement when a PAS Federal Territories

Minister under the previous Federal Government scrapped the island’s duty-free privilege on tobacco and alcohol items.

George Elias said this is because it was Harris, who as Sabah Chief Minister during Berjaya, caused the island to be given away free to Federal in 1984 to be made a Federal Territory, causing much suffering today from federal policies.

“When Labuan parted from Sabah’s jurisdiction there was no compensation except on commitment to transform the island into mini city with a vibrant economy.
