Kota Kinabalu: Water Berhad (Life Water), a leading local beverage manufacturer through its subsidiary Green Borneo Industries Sdn Bhd, has won the Malaysia Smart Manufacturing Award 2023 (MSMA 2023) under the IR4.0 Readiness Category: Adoption Achievement.

The MSMA is a national award endorsed by the Ministry of Investment Trade and Industry (MITI).

On behalf of Life Water, its Operations Manager Ms Chin Lee Yung received the award during the MSMA Award Presentation ceremony presented by Minister of MITI Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, held at Menara MITI, Kuala Lumpur on July 24, this year.

According to its statement here, Life Water’s automated factories at Industrial Zone 4 and Industrial Zone 8, Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, continually adopt high technologies and innovations.

They recently emerged as frontrunners in embracing Industry4WRD principles, transforming their production landscape into a smarter and more efficient operation.

“Gone are the days of disconnected data silos between ERP systems and the production floor, limited production visibility due to manual data collection, and the absence of real-time data visualization hampering proactive decision-making. Paper-based forms and documentation have given way to digitalisation.

“Comprehensive Industry 4WRD solutions for the two manufacturing plants allow for integrated production and energy management and real-time energy consumption monitoring for predictive maintenance.

“For example, monitoring voltage and energy consumption helps predict bottle-blowing machine failures.”

An Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) suite enables data visualization through an interactive live dashboard that tracks the top 10 reasons for machine downtime and bottle count.

This performance bottleneck identification allows management to gain insights into individual machine performance, it added.

“With smart automation in place, measurable successes are seen in terms of real-time production visibility for informed decision-making, reduced downtime through predictive maintenance, and boosted efficiency (producing more while spending less).

“The initial implementation of Industry4WRD principles presented significant human resource challenges for Life Water.

Employees needed to adapt to new technologies and processes or a smart factory environment which required substantial upskilling and reskilling.

“Life Water overcame these challenges through continuous training programs tailored to various employee roles and more importantly, by instilling positive mindset in the workplace,” according to a statement.

This ensured that staff at all levels were well-equipped to handle the technological advancements and changes in their work environment.

Regular workshops, hands-on training sessions, and collaboration with technology providers helped bridge the skills gap and foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation.

By investing in their workforce’s development, Life Water not only facilitated a smoother transition to smart manufacturing but also empowered their employees to contribute to the company’s long-term success and sustainability.

“Adopting the smart factory concept translates to increased productivity, reduced manpower, and much higher overall equipment efficiencies.

“Life Water’s continual upgrades in technology enable it to stay competitive and relevant in Sabah’s beverage manufacturing industry, serving its customers better and fulfilling its purpose of making quality beverages affordable for everyone,” it said.

Life Water produces Sabah’s popular beverage brands K2 and Sasa Drinking Water, K2 Green Bottle, Tritonic Isotonic Electrolyte Drink, 2more Caffeine-Free Sparkling Soda, and OEM brands.
