Gold quest gets back on track
The gold winning Petanque triples and mixed triples members.
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah are back on track in their hunt for 40 gold medals at the XXI Sarawak Sukma Games with three more added to their medal tally on Thursday.

Petanque lifted the State contingent’s gloom following Wednesday’s gold-less day by delivering both medals at the Santubong Petanque Arena in Kuching.

The three-woman team featuring Marysa Appel @ Denny, Siti Noor Ellyshatul Balqish Suhaimi and Thadis Henhera Vennice delivered the first gold of the day by beating Johor 11-4 in the final.

The  mixed team of Muhammad Aeqhmal Mohammad Ardhy, Maxivianna Robert and Siti Nur Vivianah Chia followed suit with a 10-7 victory over the home team.

Head coach  Wahadhir Hamdan who heaved a sigh of relief after the finals was delighted they managed to surpass their one gold target.

“We were actually under pressure after we lost in the singles and doubles events earlier. Today we knew there was a chance as our three-member team are strong, but they too faced a very tough fight from their opponents…. we are very thankful that in the end we won not just one but two golds today,” he said.

The third gold was won by Deirdra Jacquelina Richard in boxing women’s minimum weight 45-48kg with a convincing 5-0 win over Sarawak’s Patricia Jaquilina Anak Bruce over three rounds.

Sabah also won three silvers on Thursday with one from the archery men’s compound team of Aloysius Gabriel Liew, Muhammad Irfan Sobrun Masahudi, Nathaniel Tan Zhi after losing the final to the Terengganu team 221-226.

The second silver was delivered by silambam athlete Zeqxvaly Rhajqhay Malor following his 2-10 loss to Perak’s Prevenan A/L Prakaslingam in the men’s poruthal 55-65kg category, while the third from the track and field through Hamizan Syahmi Jailin in the men’s pole vault.

Seven more bronze medals were won on the same day from Muhd Izzudin in the men’s pole vault, the cycling team of Ryan Zeck Badimin, Yvainne Donny, Mohammad Zahir Zahari, Drevionna Magdelynna Davin in the mix cross country Olympic (XCO) relay, Muhammad Anilrian Normatr Abdullah (diving 10m platform), Chu Xin Ying (swimming women’s 400m freestyle), Frenynila Sherly Lucius (women’s 400m hurdles), Nathan Zeke Augusti (judo men’s -90kg), Hallary Boy (boxing men’s lightweight 57-60kg) and Aelfred Eter Tohiron (boxing men’s minimum weight 45-48kg). 

Sabah also won a bronze late on Wednesday night from the rhythmic gymnastic men’s team (Addison Chang Sui Xin, Jasley Chun Min Lu, Liew Jun Xiang, Leevan Savahi Moosom, Marvell Vincent Voo,Tyler Jordan Lajanty).
