Graft: Illegal gambling syndicate leader fined

TAWAU: The ring leader of a syndicate which operated online gambling and illegal 4-D activities was fined RM6,600 for four charges of failing to report bribery to the Malaysian

Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) which involved three police officers to protect their illegal activities.

Tai Nyuk Kong, 45, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga, to all the charges against him.

On the first count, he was fined RM1,200 or two months’ jail for failing to report the bribery activity regarding the RM200 bribe to a sergeant through his worker as a reward for keeping a blind eye on the sale of illegal 4D in the district.

On the second count, Tai was fined another RM1,200 or two months’ jail for committing similar offence involving a RM200 bribe to a lance corporal for the same purpose at the Sime Darby Ladang Imam area, here.

On the third count, he was fined RM3,000 or three months’ jail for failing to report the bribery activity involving a RM500 bribe to a Sergeant Major for same purpose.

On the fourth count, Tai was fined another RM1,200 or spend two months in prison for similar offence involving RM200 to a Lance Corporal.

During mitigation, Tai, who was not represented, asked for leniency saying that he is now only selling tofu and bean sprouts and was no longer running the illegal business.

He informed the court that he has five children and a sick mother to look after.

However, Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor  Nurul Izzati Sapifee who was assisted by MACC Prosecuting Officer Norsham Saharom, urged the court to impose an appropriate punishment.

Based on the facts of the case, Tai, as the leader of the Sabah97 Group was found to have bribed police officers around Tawau so that they would not take action against illegal activities involving online gambling syndicates and illegal 4D activity belonging to him in 2020 to 2021. 

Tai then instructed his two employees to pay the bribes to the policemen to protect the unlicensed gambling activities he was conducting it in the Kalabakan and Bombalai areas to ensure police would not arrest his agents who were selling tickets there.
