Sabah fail to achieve 40-gold target in Sarawak

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah fell short of their 40-gold target at the XXI Sarawak Sukma which concluded on Saturday.
They finished with 29 gold, 36 silver and 55 bronze medals to settle in eighth position.
ADVERTISEMENT At the last Sukma in 2022, they finished in sixth with 30 gold, 29 silver and 39 bronze medals. They only managed to win one gold, three silvers and two bronzes on the final day of competition.
Gymnast Marvell Vincent Voo was the only gold medal winner in the men’s horizontal bars, while teammate Addison Chang Sui Xin delivered a bronze in the men’s vault.
State coach Liew Tiong Ee was pleased with the performance of the Bukit Jalil-based athlete who delivered the first gymnastic gold for the State in over 10 years.
He is also happy that they managed to meet their one-gold target.

“We had actually targeted one gold this time, and was delighted to meet the target. We would like to thank the national and local coaches with their effort put in since December 2022, and also to the Sabah Sports Council, Sabah Gymnastic Association, Sabah Sports Board and all the officials and parents for their support,” he said

Liew added that the preparation for next Sukma will begin in December with the first phase of selection.
Meanwhile, the three silvers came from sailing in optimist through Nur Hafizanah in the women’s category, Muhd Aiman Aqeel in the men’s category and the mixed team, while the other bronze won by Danya Marczqui in the men’s optimist.
The sailing contingent won a total of three golds, five silvers and two bronzes to top the medal tally in the competition.
Their closest rival Terengaanu also managed to win three golds and five silvers but no bronze.
Sabah Sailing Association President Zainal Madi, who is also the coach, was happy that they managed to exceed their two-gold medal target.
