LABUAN: Firms undertaking infrastructure development projects near rivers without any effective flood mitigation plan and causing major floods to nearby houses and substantial damage to property and misery should be held accountable and the victims compensated.
Pensioner Tony Khanna, whose house was among 20 at Kampung Gersik Lama inundated recently, said the water level in the house was about two and half feet with the fridge and sofa floating, fittings damaged and car engine half-submerged.

Tony, who was acting for the spokesman, said the area never encountered such flooding the past 40 years even during heavy downpour. “We have reason to believe it was due to upgrading works being carried out at the adjacent Gersik River.”
