Trafficking syabu: Man charged
The offence, under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A man was tentatively charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with trafficking 71.83gm of syabu.

Arpad Unu allegedly committed the offence on Aug 13 at 2.15pm in the bushes area in Inanam.

However, no plea was recorded from Arpad during the hearing before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin.

The prosecution in applying for a mention date, objected bail as the charge has no provision for one.

Marilyn fixed Oct 4 for mention and ordered the accused to remain in custody.

In another case, a 26-year-old man was charged with burglary.

General worker Irwan Afandi pleaded not guilty to breaking into a store belonging to Galilee Design and Build Sadong Jaya along with two accomplices still at large and stealing a set of welding machine, cables and a set of cutting machine on May 13 at 11.15am.

The charge under Section 457 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 14 years, on conviction.

The prosecution in applying for another mention date, proposed bail at RM6,000.

Duty counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Irwan, requested a lower bail amount, noting that he is married with two children and is the sole breadwinner of his family.

The court set Oct 1 for mention and offered Irwan bail at RM1,800 in two sureties.
