Kota Kinabalu: Preventing further fragmentation of elephant habitats is the only way to minimise their conflict with humans, said Pertubuhan Pemuliharaan Biodiversiti Seratu Aatai Sabah (Seratu Aatai) Director Dr Nurzhafarina Othman.
It called for renewed focus on protecting the State’s endangered elephant population and their habitats after launching the Kinabatangan Endangered Species Educational Corner at the Tanjung Aru Marine Ecosystem Centre, recently.
The event was jointly hosted by Seratu Aatai, Sabah Pangolin Awareness Association and Explore Gaia Enterprise in conjunction with the World Elephants Day.
“One of the recommendations is not to further fragment so we don’t have any more forests to cut or open. But there are a lot of socio-economic activities that can seal further fragmented elephant habitat,” Dr Nurzhafarina said, pointing out the importance of the Sabah Elephant State Action Plan 2020-2029 which provides a roadmap for elephant conservation.
