Vocational students help repair Keningau house

Kota Kinabalu: A group of 26 third-year Construction Technology students from Keningau Vocational College (KVC) recently repaired a dilapidated stilt wooden house.

KVC Director Nordin Akup praised the team of volunteers for their hard work and noble deed, noting that it sets a great example for other college members.

“Community service is one of the mandatory subjects that each student at every vocational college must take, and Keningau Vocational College is committed to leveraging the skills and resources we have to help the community in every way possible,” he said in a statement.

Ara Billa Biton, the team leader and a member of the student council, said the restoration work in a paddy field in Keningau provided valuable fieldwork experience.

She said the initiative began after a fieldwork visit that revealed one of the students, who had lost his parents years ago, was living in unfavourable conditions due to poverty.

“Funds including the RM2,300 awarded during the YouthMADE Festival Amplify 2024 grant and further crowdfunding efforts by the college’s welfare committee which raised an additional RM 2,500.

“The funds enabled the entire third-year Construction Technology class, with assistance from lecturers and the student’s family, to purchase necessary materials and carry out the restoration work.

“Focusing on the most critical repairs, the team reinforced the stairs, replaced the floors on the porch and in the kitchen, and restored the exterior railings.

“They also cleared debris and rubbish that had accumulated around the house due to frequent flooding,” said Ara.

She said the team plans to use the remaining funds to undertake a similar service project for another home or building in the near future.
