Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court here Monday fined a 31-year-old man RM1,900 or a month’s jail for having gambling paraphernalia.

Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin meted out the sentence to Alvin Kibin after he pleaded guilty to purchasing five Wah Hui riddles gambling tickets on March 25 at 4.30pm at the five-foot way of a restaurant in Putatan new township.

The court was informed by the prosecution that Alvin was arrested by police during Ops Dadu after he was found having gambling paraphernalia, including a mobile printer, a handphone and RM40 in cash.

Alvin was charged under Section 9(1) of the same Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.

He requested a lenient sentence.

In another case, a 39-year-old man, who fraudulently had RM50,000 deposited into his bank account three years ago was fined RM100 or three days jail.

Hong Chin Chai admitted to having the money belonging to a company in his Maybank account in which he failed to explain how he obtained them between Oct 31, 2021 and Nov 1, the same year.

The offence under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance provides a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months jail or both, on conviction.

Unrepresented, Hong requested leniency and told the court that he would not allow others to borrow his bank card in future.

Meanwhile, four men were penalised for taking syabu.

Azfar Amar, Md Fitriansyah, Nurham Raji and Masbun Alama pleaded guilty separately to committing the offence under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction.

Azfar, Fitriansyah and Nurham were jailed seven months each while Masbun was handed six months jail.
