Kota Kinabalu: An attempt to smuggle syabu weighing more than 20kg was foiled by the Sabah Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) in an operation at the Mas Cargo warehouse, here, on Aug 30.
Sabah Zone Customs Assistant Director-General Siti Mang said in the 9pm operation, a team comprising narcotics and customs officers found suspicious golden packages in which the drugs were stored inside a box.

Further investigations are underway to determine if any larger syndicate network is involved and ensure that legal action will be taken against those involved,” she said at Menara Customs Sabah, here, Wednesday.
According to Siti, the modus operandi involved the use of golden plastic packages to smuggle the contraband into the country through air freight.
“Based on initial investigations, the drugs were intended to be delivered to a fake address and we are currently identifying those who may be involved.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If convicted, the perpetrator(s) may be sentenced to death penalty or life imprisonment,” she added.
Meanwhile, Siti said smuggling activities not only affect the country negatively in terms of revenue lost but also pose a threat to national security and the wellbeing of the people.

She urged the public to work together in the fight against smuggling by channelling information to authorities, especially the department, at the toll-free line 1-800-88-8855.
“The department will safeguard and protect the identity of each informant,” she added.
