Kota Kinabalu: A 42-year-old labourer was sentenced to five years’ jail and ordered given a stroke of the cane for taking syabu repeatedly.
Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan handed the sentence to Ahmad Mohd Ali, who pleaded guilty to the charge against him.

Ahmad was found taking the drug at 8.30pm on May 18 after his urine was tested positive at the police station here.
He has two previous conviction records under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) for taking drugs few times.
The offence under Section 39C(1)/ of the DDA carries a jail term of between five and seven years, and whipping, on conviction.
The court ordered Ahmad to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.

After serving the jail sentence, Ahmad was ordered to be placed under police supervision for three years.
During mitigation, Ahmad, who was not represented, asked for leniency.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that Ahmad was a habitual offender.
