PUTATAN: Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Adam Adli Abdul Halim, urged 750 youths in Putatan to embrace risk-taking and build self-confidence, particularly in leadership roles.

Speaking at the Libat Urus Pelan Transisi Kepimpinan Belia session in conjunction with the 2024 State-Level Kembara Jumpa Orang Muda (Kembara JOM), he said, an education system that punishes mistakes is inappropriate, as it can hinder the development and self-confidence of young people.

The goal, he said, is to cultivate a generation capable of standing on its own, critically engaging with leaders, and surpassing the achievements of previous generations.

“How can we expect young people to progress if they don’t take risks? Those who shy away from risks will remain passive, merely waiting for opportunities and hoping for help. This is not the future we envision.

“We want a generation of youths who are not only critical of government leaders but also able to stand up for themselves and excel beyond previous generations.

“Confidence is key, and it should be built by encouraging them not to fear making mistakes or wrong moves. Life is long, and they have time to grow and develop their identity,” Adam said during the Kembara JOM Programme at Dewan Sri Putatan, Putatan.

The programme was also attended by Petagas Assemblyman, Datuk Ahmad Sah Awang Sahari.

Adam said the programme is part of a strategy to expose more youths to various youth organisations and empower them as they transition into adulthood.

He said as youth approach the age of 30, they often feel less connected to the youth sector, and this programme aims to address that gap.

“This programme is designed to help them connect with others, engage in dialogue, and discuss broader issues,” Adam said.

Kembara JOM is an initiative of the Federal Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) through the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN) and the Office of the Registrar of Youth Organisations (ROY).

It aims to enable youth stakeholders to provide feedback and views on the draft Youth Leadership Transition Plan directly to the top leadership of KBS.

The feedback and views received will be used to finalise the plan, which will be the driving force behind the implementation of amendments to the Youth Organizations and Youth Development Act 2007 (Act 668).

Adam said the input obtained from this programme would be incorporated into the budget of any programme that includes the resulting feedback.

“For example, there are youth groups still waiting for basic facilities to be addressed in their respective areas, so we see that there is still much work to be done. Or in the case of programmes that empower them in business, we may be seen as lacking. Therefore, we need to increase allocations. This is why we have made this an engaging session,” he said.

Adam said the programme is the third destination in a series of tours covering Kota Marudu, Keningau and several other places including Labuan.

Among the key amendments to Act 668 is the lowering of the definition of the youth age limit to 30 years, setting the age limit for the head or office holder of a youth organisation to 18 to 30 years, and limiting the term of the head of a youth organisation to four years.

The amendment to Act 668 was passed in Parliament in 2019 and will come into force on January 1 2026.

Accordingly, the Kembara JOM initiative serves as the best platform for youth stakeholders to provide feedback and views on the youth leadership transition plan, increase knowledge and understanding related to Act 668 and its 2019 amendment, enhance awareness of the country’s youth direction and leadership, and obtain the latest information to design comprehensive and inclusive youth development programmes and activities.

Among the activities included in the Kembara JOM initiative are briefings by the Office of the Registrar of Youth Organisation (ROY), Rakan Muda activities, and exhibitions by government departments and agencies.

The implementation of Kembara JOM also demonstrates the Madani Government’s commitment to empowering youth development, in line with the aspirations and framework of Malaysia Madani and the Madani Youth Development Model 2030 (MPBM 2030).
