Benedict only Malaysian in grand final

Kota Kinabalu: Up and coming junior golfer Benedict Wong is making waves in the international scene with some impressive results recently.

The 18-year-old local lad known for hitting the ball with an impressive 300 yards is the grandson of former champion Peter Wong.

He has qualified for the Hainan Junior Golf Tour Grand Final 2024 to be held at the Oak Forrest Golf Club, Wanning, Hainan in China on September 26-29.

He made the cut following his triumphant outing at the “Oak Forest Cup” China Hainan Youth Golf Tour Malaysia Station held at the Glenmarie Golf Course in Shah Alam, Selangor early last month when he took the Group A title with a total score of 225 beating his opponents from other countries as well.

His father Alan when contacted is delighted with his son’s progress but said Benedict still needs to improve his short game.

He believes if Benedict is able to master that, he will be on a regular under-par streak.

He also hopes his son’s success will inspire more youth in the State to take up golf.

He added that his son who is a straight A’s student and currently studying at the University of Hong Kong has just competed in the Hong Kong Amateur Open held at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

According to him, the youngster again did very well against his more experienced and senior competitors to finish in fourth place in his debut at the championship with a four-day total of 285.
