TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister 1 Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan called on the people of Sabah to participate in the one house two flags initiative by flying the Sabah Flag and the Jalur Gemilang at their respective premises to fuel the atmosphere of independence and strengthen the spirit of identity as Malaysians.
He said the government’s various approaches and efforts to increase the spirit of patriotism among Sabahans, especially today’s young generation about the struggle of previous leaders for the country’s independence from the colonial era.

“The fate of a nation will not change if it does not try to change its fate.
“The young generation needs to realise that today’s knowledge is a useful supply to generate the continued independence and prosperity of the country in the future,” he said when officiating the district level Jiwa Komuniti Madani@ Program Komuniti Merdeka at Balai Raya Kampung Tikolod, here, on Friday.
Jeffrey, who is also Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, urged every young generation, youth, individual, family, community, government premises, private agency and GLC throughout the state to fly the Sabah Flag and the Jalur Gemilang with pride and respect according to the instructions and guidelines that have been set ahead of Malaysia Day on Sept 16.

“The Sabah Flag and the Jalur Gemilang are not just a piece of cloth decorated with beautiful patterns and colours, but are symbol of national pride, unity and sovereignty,” he said.
He said flying the Sabah Flag and the Jalur Gemilang with pride and passion for the country is the responsibility of every Malaysian.

According to him, this year is particularly special for the people of Sabah because for the first time they also celebrate Sabah Day after it was gazetted on June 5.
He said “Malaysia Madani, Jiwa Merdeka” is a theme that coincides with the vibrant spirit of freedom and identity of the Malaysian people in line with the fighting spirit of the freedom fighters inherited by the people in all aspects of life.
“By sticking to that theme, the people together are determined to further strengthen the spirit of independence and strive to build a country that is not only physically free, but also free in terms of thought, culture and economy.
“Therefore the programme is not just an annual event, but a symbol of unity, pride and gratitude of Malaysians,” said Jeffrey, who is also Tambunan e Assemblyman.
He reminded the people of the history of sacrifice and tireless efforts of national heroes who fought for the freedom and prosperity enjoyed by all the people of Sabah today.
Present were Tambunan District Officer Sobitun Makajil, Keningau District Officer Peter Jonu Moinjil, Sabah and Federal Government officials, community leaders and villagers.
