Liberal Democratic Party tells PAS: Understand constitution
David and Hadi
Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong hit out at PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang on his statement regarding the position of non-Muslims in Malaysia.

“Malaysia is a constitutional democracy where the rights of every citizen, regardless of race or religion, are protected by law,” said David in a statement.

“Hadi’s claim that non-Muslims should be ‘grateful for being given a place’ in this country is misleading and go against our democratic principles.

I want to remind Hadi that Malaysia belongs to all Malaysians.  It is not the property of any one racial or religious group to “give” to others.

“Our Federal Constitution, the supreme law of the land, plainly guarantees equal rights and protections for all Malaysian citizens.

Article 8 of the Constitution clearly states that all persons are equal before the law and entitled to equal protection of the law.

“Additionally, Article 153, while recognising the special position of Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak, also safeguards the legitimate interests of other communities.

This provision reflects the balanced approach intended by our Constitution to maintain harmony and unity in our nation,” he said.

He said Malaysia’s strength comes from its diversity and the contributions of all its people.

“To suggest that only one group should lead the country goes against the democratic values that allow every Malaysian to have a voice.

Hadi Awang has failed to uphold these values and his divisive rhetoric only weakens the foundations of our democracy.

“I call upon Hadi to retract his statements, which we believe are unconstitutional and harmful to national unity.

All members of parliament should uphold the principles of our Constitution and to promote policies that unite rather than divide our multicultural society.

“Let us remember that Malaysia was founded on principles of unity, democracy, and equality.

LDP remains committed to these values and to creating a Malaysia where every citizen, no matter their background, has an equal part in shaping our future,” he said.
