KENINGAU: The Keningau Vocational College (KVC) Dance Troupe, comprising several male and female students from various vocational programmes, is determined to dignify local traditional dances through their consistent participation in various activities.

They have learned as many traditional dances as possible through dance workshops while performing at public and private events as well as competing in several local and global contests, said College Research and Innovation head Dr Sirhajwan Idek here.

He said the team won a silver medal in the remotely held Star Bridge Malaysia-Poland Arts Competition last month and secured second place at the state level Malaysia School Dance Competition known as Ta’seem held physically in Kudat last June.

“The team was created almost two decades ago by the college English teacher, Nurazilah Othman, who is a dance expert appointed by the Sabah Education Department, with the assistance of the college’s performing arts team of teachers and staff, namely  Nur Syahida Mohd Nazri, Siti Aminah Sebli @ Sabli, Dzul Japarisa Ekang, and Lerry David,” he said.

Sirhajwan said the current members of the dance troupe are Vennyvanisha Leku Frances, Safirza Madinah Joise Duan, Ave Vannissa Edmund, Marie Rose Barry, Tracy Walter, Muhd Alif Nazrul Nasir, Arman Mailin, Haiqal Danish Rizal, Jerry Beckham Eswor, Leorend Lawerinis, Sonia Ivana Jack and Reallesah Karim.

In addition to college events, he said the team frequently performed at various official and community events in Keningau, including the 2023 Sabah School Sports Championship and 2024 Crocker Range Festival.

He said the team learnt various dance routines, namely Magunatip, Joget, Rambai, Sumazau, Angalang, Zapin, Inang, Raja Berangkat, Chinese Folk Dance, Bharatanatyam and Limbai.

College Director, Nordin Akup, thanked the team members for their dedication in highlighting the country’s cultural diversity and preserving cultural heritage.

He always supports the college’s performing arts team who constantly seeks ways to scout and nurture young talents across various art forms.

Besides dancing, he said, the college students are also active in singing, visual arts, poetry, theatre, choir and band performances.
