Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) President Nigel Wong described Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew and Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah as shining examples of what tourism leaders should be.
He said the two State Ministers not only recognise the important role of tourism stakeholders and empower them to help develop the industry but also lead by example.
“Their leadership by example is reflected in their active participation in key tourism events such as the World Travel Mart (WTM) in London and ITB Berlin (the world’s largest travel trade show), together with their private sector counterparts,” Wong said in his speech at the just-concluded 55th Edition of Matta Fair, here.
From the Matta President’s observation, both the Sabah and Sarawak State Governments have been proactive in providing funding and resources to private sector-led initiatives.
“This is a very effective strategy that capitalises on the deep business relationships forged by the private sector with their business associates,” he said.
According to Wong, both states have vast tourism potential that has yet to be realised and Matta looks forward to a deeper level of engagement and partnership with both Sabah and Sarawak towards developing and nurturing that potential.
Liew and Abdul Karim jointly officiated at the opening of Matta Fair 2024 featuring a record 1,590 exhibition booths.
