Supporting Petronas’ sustainability aspirations, UTP has embraced sustainability as a core principle, integrating it into all facets of our operations, from administration and teaching to research priorities and day-to-day workings,” said Mohamed Ibrahim during UTP Luncheon with local media, Monday.
He said UTP’s dedication to sustainability is evident in our collaboration with Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd for the installation of a 7.4MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop panel, the largest single solar rooftop in Malaysia.
The university is also actively working towards becoming a low-carbon campus by improving energy efficiency, reducing energy requirements, and minimising carbon emissions.
Various sustainable practices have been implemented, such as effective recycling, using recycled water, and enhancing campus walkways to encourage walking and micromobility.

Mohammad Ibrahim also said to further support the growing workforce needs in Sabah and globally, UTP is launching a groundbreaking new engineering programme.
“This innovative programme will equip students with the skills and knowledge required to contribute to the growth of Petronas and other industries.
“In addition to these initiatives, UTP is hosting ESTCON2024, a sustainability-focused congress taking place on 10-11 at the Sabah International Convention Centre.
“It will bring together 1,000 researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders from 25 countries to explore solutions and foster collaboration on critical environmental challenges.
“ESTCON2024 will showcase a lineup of 35 distinguished speakers, including academics, scientists, and industry experts representing various sectors,” he said.
This year, researchers will present over 500 papers covering these critical themes, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among industry experts and academics.
Mohamed Ibrahim concluded by expressing gratitude for the media’s support and inviting them to attend and cover ESTCON 2024 to learn more about UTP’s sustainability efforts.
