Kota Kinabalu: The Eighth World Engineering Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) 2024  hosted by Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) here has provided an important platform for experts to discuss the latest trends and challenges in engineering, technology, and humanities.

The biennial event reinforces the university’s role in driving innovation and sustainability in higher education and beyond.

Its Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib in his speech on Tuesday drew special attention to the university’s commitment to shaping the future through sustainable energy, digitalisation and smart community initiatives.

He pointed out UTP’s alignment with Petronas’ sustainability aspirations, integrating these principles into all aspects of university operations.

“Supporting Petronas’ sustainability aspirations, UTP has embraced sustainability as a core principle, integrating it into all facets of our operations, from administration and teaching to research priorities and day-to-day workings.

“UTP’s dedication to sustainability is evident in our collaboration with Gentari for the installation of a 7.4MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop panel, the largest single solar rooftop in Malaysia,” he said.

He said the university is also actively working towards becoming a low-carbon campus by improving energy efficiency, reducing energy requirements, and minimising carbon emissions.

“Various sustainable practices have been implemented, such as effective recycling, using recycled water, and enhancing campus walkways to encourage walking and micro-mobility,” he said.

He said in the realm of digitalisation, UTP is driving the transformation by integrating cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) across its academic and research programmes.

A prime example is the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostic Technology (ADaPT) in collaboration with Petronas.

“We pioneered the world’s first round-the-clock structural health monitoring technology, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

“Additionally, UTP has made significant strides with ORCA, a revolutionary technology co-developed with Petronas. ORCA is an innovative solution designed to optimize operations and resource management in complex industrial environments, enhancing efficiency and sustainability,” he said.

He said UTP has also partnered with Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) to develop the Haj e-Learning system, the world’s first platform of its kind.

“This groundbreaking system empowers prospective pilgrims to effectively and easily learn and expand their knowledge about Haj, anytime and anywhere.

“These efforts are not only enhancing the university’s operational efficiencies but are also equipping students and researchers with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in an increasingly digital world,” he said.

He said furthermore, UTP’s commitment to developing smart communities is evident in its collaborative projects that leverage technology to create intelligent, connected, and sustainable living environments.

“UTP’s Institute of Smart and Sustainable Living (ISSL) together with Malaysia Industry-Government Group for High Technology (Might) and Malaysia Smart Cities Alliance Association (MSCA) is working to establish the Malaysia Smart City Innovation Hub, which integrates ISSL’s smart innovations in transportation, infrastructure, clean energy, and water and waste management.

This is in line with the smart and sustainable living solutions through technology and social innovation, striving towards net-zero carbon emissions and community well-being.

“UTP is also excited to roll out an initiative that embodies UTP’s unwavering commitment to advancing research, innovation and commercialisation, namely the UTP Ignite Website, a dedicated hub showcasing the ground-breaking innovations emerging from our University.

“The UTP Ignite Website is a gateway to the pioneering research and technologies being developed by our talented researchers.

“Through this platform, potential investors, industry partners, and collaborators can gain in-depth insights into our innovative solutions, including dynamic three-minute videos featuring 18 of our most promising technologies,” he said, adding that the website is now fully accessible.
