UMS, Petrotechnical collab on research and training
Exchange of LoI documents between FKJ and Petrotechnical Inspection Sdn Bhd.
Kota Kinabalu: The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Petrotechnical Inspection (M) Sdn Bhd to collaborate on research and development in the oil and gas industry, particularly in Sabah.

Dean of FKJ, Associate Professor Ir Ts Dr Ismail Saad, said UMS seeks to strengthen its ties with the industry to enhance the academic capabilities and practical experience of FKJ students, thereby contributing to the advancement of the oil and gas sector.

“FKJ offers a specialised oil and gas programme and this partnership will facilitate academic and student exchanges. 

“We also require the expertise of engineers from Petrotechnical Inspection to train our students,” Ismail said.

He said FKJ UMS would continue to place students for industrial training at Petrotechnical Inspection and many are currently gaining valuable experience.

 “I am hopeful that this collaboration will enhance the employability of FKJ graduates and create more research opportunities with the industry,” he said.

Ismail also said that FKJ boasts researchers skilled in the oil and gas field, and this collaboration will further advance research and development within the industry.

The LoI signing ceremony took place during the third International Conference on Oil and Gas Industry Technology and Applications (ICOG-ITA) 2024 on Tuesday. 

UMS was represented by Ismail, while Petrotechnical Inspection was represented by Business Manager Kanthavel Rengathan.

In his address at the ICOG-ITA conference, UMS Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Haji Mansor said the conference aims to unite industry professionals, academics and leaders to exchange knowledge, insights and innovations that will shape the future of the oil and gas sector.

“Furthermore, this conference provides a unique platform for collaboration between industry and academia, enabling the sharing of innovative research and the formation of partnerships to address the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead,” he said.

Kasim said UMS’s commitment to advancing energy innovation through interdisciplinary research and producing a new generation of engineers and scientists who are not only technically skilled but also conscious of their role in fostering a sustainable future.

Kasim’s speech was read by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of UMS, Professor Dr Rosalam Sarbatly.

“I believe that education and research are the main drivers of progress.

“Discussions and presentations at this conference will contribute to the future success of the industry and ensure it remains dynamic and sustainable towards cleaner and more efficient energy solutions,” said Kasim. 

A total of 50 participants including from Russia, Indonesia and the Philippines participated in the two-day conference as a hybrid in Klagan Regency, Kota Kinabalu.
