10 teams competing in UG Cup basketball championship

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 10 teams from eight churches are taking part in the 8th Kota Kinabalu UG Cup Basketball Championship 2024 which started on September 8 at the SM All Saints’ hall.

Two matches were held on the opening day. Basel Christian Church Malaysia A (BCCM-A) easily defeated Methodist Church A (MC-A) 89-40.

Vun Jing Wu was the top scorer for BCCM-A with 15 points and four rebounds and Rueben Chong contributed 13 points and six rebounds, while Wong Hii Kion scored nine points and three rebounds for MC-A.

In another match, the much younger Kota Kinabalu Bread of Life Church (KKBOL) side had no answer for the more balanced Roman Catholic A (RC-A).

They lost tamely 59-96 despite the effort by Goh Wenn Wei who managed to score 21 points and seven rebounds.

RC-A on the other hand, had five players reaching double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds from Kevin Chu and captain Daniel Wong with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Organising chairman Ling Cheng Yiing said the theme of this year’s tournament which will be concluded on September 14 is encouraging everyone to unite in the name of the Lord and through  basketball as a channel to spread the love of Christ.

He also thanked all the churches, players, officials, fans and sponsors for their support and called on the public to come and watch the matches.
