Sabah Day good for unity: Historian
Daily Express coverage of the circumstances leading to the delay of the formation of Malaysia.
Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaya history Professor Datuk Dr Danny Wong Tze Ken said gazetting Sabah Day by this present Sabah Government and celebration of the occasion, on Aug 31 hence forth is a historic occasion.

That was the day 61 years ago when Sabah attained self-government with a new State Constitution, State Flag and State Anthem.

Prof. Dr Wong, who is also Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor gazetted it and the Gazette was published on June 20, 2024 based on the premise that “… the State Cabinet has decided to gazette Sabah Day because it is important for Sabahans to remember our own State’s independence.”

He said Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan played a crucial role in bringing Sabah Day to the public domain and would have otherwise remained little known.
