KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will introduce smart meters as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade and improve the quality of electricity supply services for consumers in Sabah and Labuan.
Its Chief Executive Officer, Mohd Yaakod Jaafar, said that using smart meters will encourage consumers to use electricity more efficiently and save energy.
According to him, through the use of these smart meters, consumers will be able to plan their monthly electricity usage and set a limit.
They will also receive notifications when the monthly bill target has reached the predetermined limit.
He said these new features align with SESB's efforts to support and realise the government's aspiration to empower the digital economy for the benefit of the people.
The smart meter project will be implemented in stages. Phase 1 involves installing 6,497 units, targeting Large Power Consumers and feed-in tariff (FiT) account holders.
"A total of 60 units will be installed over the two-month trial phase, targeting selected users to ensure smooth system and billing operations," he said.
"The remaining 6,437 units will be rolled out once the trial phase has achieved the project's objectives."
He added that Phase 2 of the project will be implemented in 2025, targeting domestic users in Kota Kinabalu and Labuan.
