Mayul and Hui Lian emerge champs
The participants at this year’s Borneo Pangazou.
Kota Kinabalu: Mayul from Brunei and Malaysia’s Hui Lian Chiew emerged champions in the Borneo Pangazou functional fitness tournament held at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex over the weekend.

Mayul took the men’s title while the women’s title went to Hui Lian and both walked away with RM2,000 in cash, a coveted Beoka massage gun, standard Issue vouchers, and a selection of local merchandise.

The team title was won by Team JENS from Malaysia. They took home the RM4,000 winning cash, standard issue vouchers and an exclusive Xpodium gear.

Event director Timothy Cheng said in a statement that only the top 150 athletes from the total of 400 at the start made it past the qualifying rounds and into the finals.

The contenders included some from China, the Philippines, Brunei, and Thailand were pushed to the limit over the course of seven workouts masterminded by renowned local fitness coach Hadie Affendie.

The opening day was a combination of pull-ups, squats, and push-ups, followed by a 2km run around the lake at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex.

The final two days featured workouts to test the athletes’ strength and endurance.

They had to power through weightlifting movements like snatches, clean and jerks, deadlifts, and thrusters, and mastered gymnastics feats like ring muscle-ups, handstand walks, and rope climbs completed with burpees.

The event this year was a collaboration led by Sandakan Orthopedic Association in partnership with PX5 Functional Gym, Garage Gym and Poliklinik Olidas supported by the Circle21 scoring app.

The organisers also expressed their gratitude to all the judges, volunteers and the sponsors for their support.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Sabah Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jimit who also handed out all the prizes.
